from the final days at Campion
An interesting infrared aerial photograph (photo
#001-011-10-1994) of Prairie du Chien and the Campion campus is available at The
U.S. Geological Survey website
http://www.umesc.usgs.gov/aerial_photos/l/lx3a2_1994ir.html Er, it was taken
at a somewhat higher altitude than Fr Strozuk's well published black and white
campus photograph from the 1970's - like, maybe from a U2???
Taken in 1994 (just before the State took over), the
campus (still intact) can be seen south of town. Despite the high altitude at
which the pic was taken, the detail is good - one can see all the sidewalks
traversing the quadrangle as well as the buildings, including a new structure (I
believe it was a music building) built on the quadrangle between Lucey and
Hoffman Halls when the place functioned as Martin Luther Prep. One is also
struck by the size of the entire Campion campus, when the lower athletic fields,
the golf course and the varsity football (at time of photo, apparently a
baseball) field south of the campus are identified and included.
A picture of the new Mississippi bridge (photo #
002-013-10-1994)as well as photographs of various nearby towns in WI and IA are
also available.
In June 16, 2003, Chris O'Brien's ,'70', son was killed in what appeared to have
been a tragic accident in Newton Mass.
William P. Leahy, S.J., was appointed the 25th president
of Boston College in 1996. At Marquette University for five years, he served
in positions as executive vice president of the university and associate
professor of history. Father Leahy was recognized for his work in strengthening
undergraduate education, specifically in connecting academics, extracurricular
activities and residence life. After entering the Wisconsin province of
the Society of Jesus in 1967, Father Leahy was ordained a priest in 1978.
He completed doctoral studies in United States history at Stanford University
in 1985. Father Leahy earned master's degrees in divinity and sacred theology
at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, Calif. He also taught at
Campion Jesuit High School in Prairie du Chien, Wis. Father Leahy wrote
Adapting to America: Catholics, Jesuits and Higher Education in the Twentieth
Century, as well as numerous articles on religious and educational history
in the United States. He serves on the boards of Saint Louis University
and the WGBH Educational Foundation in Boston.

Leo Sweeney, S.J.
60 years in the Society of Jesus
This year marks Father Sweeney's 60th anniversary
as a Jesuit. Born on a farm in O'Connor, Neb., in 1918, he entered the
Society of Jesus at Florissant, Mo., on Sept. 1, 1936. After the traditional
Jesuit training of novitiate and juniorate (Florissant), philosophy (St.
Louis University), regency (Campion H.S., Prairie du Chien, Wis.) and theology
(St. Mary's, Kansas), he was ordained a priest at St. Mary's on June 14,
1949. After tertianship (Decatur, Ill.) in 1950-51, he spent three years
at the University of Toronto, where he received a Ph.D. degree in Greek
and medieval philosophy in 1954. Father Sweeney has held teaching positions
at St. Louis University, 1954-67; Creighton University, 1967-70; and Catholic
University of America in Washington, D.C., 1970-72. Since 1972, Father
Sweeney has served as research professor, author, editor and chaplain of
the varsity soccer and track teams at Loyola University Chicago. He was
1996 president of the Jesuit Philosophical Association and served from
1980-85 as vice-president, president and executive council member of the
American Catholic Philosophical Association.
Some recent news sent
in by Paul Dudek:
My in-laws are there (Arizona) and gave me an obituary
for Rick Rizzo, Campion '66. He died on Feb 11, 99.
One other bit of bad news. Dave Kruglinski, Class
of '65, was killed in a hang-gliding accident a few yers year ago.
(6/24/98) Chgo Trib had Jack Tchelebian's Obit. Died
in Sun City AZ. No other info.
Now don't view this as the
Campion Obit site. Please feel free to send in any tid bits no matter how
corny, but I think deaths are a fact of life that are of interest as well.
Contact Robert "Jake" Jakoubek
"66":
I visited Prairie du Chien last July and wrote a
classmate of mine the following:
"I was at Campion on Saturday July 6 [1997] for the
completion of a bike ride along the Wisconsin River. The State of Wisconsin
had just that week brought in the first 20 prisoners. I talked both to
a guard and the fellow running Hoffman Hall -- leased to the City of Prairie
du Chien -- and learned several pieces of information. "The Lutherans basically
trashed the place on their departure. They took all the stainless out of
the cafeteria/kitchen. The Chapel is condemned, the only remaining issue
being when it will be demolished. The prisoners are staying in Lucey Hall.
Xavier Hall's future is uncertain. The faculty residence is now the prison
administration. Part \par of the (new to me) music building is the lockup
for problem prisoners. Hoffman Hall is used by the city as a winter pool
and gym. It badly needs a new roof and lots of maintenance. It was sad,
to say the least."
From the press:
Chapel endangered
PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. - Our
Lady of Angels Students' Chapel is listed by the Wisconsin Trust for Historic
Preservation as one of the 10 most endangered properties in the state.
The chapel, built in 1924-25 as part of the former Campion Jesuit High
School - later Martin Luther Preparatory School - has been purchased by
the Department of Corrections as part of a juvenile detention facility.
The trust believes the interior finishes and ecclesiastic character of
the building are threatened by removal of building details as the facilities
are remodeled.
Edward L. (Ned) Schrems '63
The Campion Class of '63 has undergone a major revival.
We have located or accounted for 125 out of 126 members of our class. It's
amazine what can be done with the internet, telephone, and some work. We
expect about 50 alums at a reunion in Chicago Oct 9-11. George Sayer has
taken on the roll of class scribe and spark plug and has sent out several
newsletters.
A recent communication from Mark (Jake) Wetterau '68',wetterau@airmail.net.
"Just for fun today I decided to see what was available on Google under Campion and your site popped up. Thanks for the memories!
I'm still in contact with Mike Scott '68'mscott@dkattorneys.com, Steve Schneider '68'mscshschneider@jsamc2.com, and Chuck Kaiser'68', ckaiser@sksins.com.
I peridocally talk to Dick Bergstrom '68' as well.
I live in the north Dallas area (Plano) and have a 15 year old daughter. She attends an all girls school, Ursuline Academy, and is the starting center on her JV basketball team (chip off the old block!).
Please add me to the list of people interested in future class reunions. I know Chuck feels the same.

Jim Bishop reports:
Just found out that Norb Eberhard, S. J. died
of cancer March 3. 1998 at the Jesuit Community in Wauwatosa, Wisc. He
was 82. Even though he threw me out of Marquette Hall as a senior, he was
one of my favorite Jebs. We will say a prayer for him at our reunion. JB
